Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira Incorporated (the Rūnanga) was established in 1989 and  is the mandated iwi authority for  Ngāti Toa Rangatira. It is a registered charitable organisation and has a mix of commercial and ‘not for profit’ subsidiaries.

In 2014 Ngāti Toa settled the historical Treaty of Waitangi claim with the Crown. The Ngāti Toa Rohe covers areas from Rangatiki (including Kapiti and Mana Island) to Wellington as well as large areas of Marlbourgh Sounds and parts of the Northern South Island.

In March 2016 the Post Settlement Goverance entity, Toa Rangatira Trust entered into negotiations to purchase the old Kenepuru hospital site from the Crown.  The strategy to purchase was a commercial opportunity for Ngāti Toa, but recognising that land development was not a core strength, Ngāti Toa wanted an experienced developer to work alongside.  After much discussion, in October 2016 Ngāti Toa purchased the 42ha site and entered into a joint venture arrangement for the site development with  Paul Adams and the Carrus team.

The Rūnanga has grown since 1989 and its group has approximately 120 employees and annual turnover of more than $20 million.

In addition to this project, Ngāti Toa currently delivers a range of services including education support and scholarships, primary health, environmental support services for local government, residential housing support, and under its fisheries arm, aquaculture advice and quota trading. Ngāti Toa also holds a number of commercial properties and forestry land in the South Island.
